Cloning and Permadeath
In the world of “tomorrow”, cloning has become a daily occurrence. So much so that if you die, a new clone is activated, not even knowing he’s dead. Various religions were outraged to find that there is no such thing as a soul in the modern world — a clone is identical in every way to the person whose memory engram has just been copied.
As a byproduct, this has meant that edgerunners’ dangerous jobs have created a large demand for cloning, and that doesn’t come cheap. Yes, you can always go to a back alley clone-doc, but who knows what’ll happen to your clone’s body parts, or even if you won’t see him out and about?
It’s made life interesting for medical teams, with commercial projects like Rocket Recovery and DocWagon taking over from government funded hospitals and ambulances. These well funded outfits have to be heavily armed, but given the right incentive, can collect your body on death and provide you with an up-to-the-second clone memory. Perfect for those who want revenge!
In the world of “tomorrow”, there is no such thing as “permanent death” — as long as you have the credits.
NB: CloneTec cannot be held responsible for clone escapees, organ harvesting, clone degeneration, etc. You are cloned at your own expense and risk. Patent Pending.
In terms of the game, this means that you can survive death — this can mean that you will survive. If you get cloned and imprinted, you’ll be able to start a new game at a higher level than starting from scratch. As you get cloned more, later clones may have interesting problems (think 3rd generation VHS and so on) such as muscle stiffness, loss of memory, reduced learning, etc. There may be a point beyond which it no longer becomes viable to clone your body and brain.
Also, there can be other complications. With how expensive cloning is, and in the violent world, organ donors can alway make money from donating (not necessarily their own, either), break-ins at less secure facilities have become common-place. Some less scrupulous (cheaper) docs also sell your clones parts to fill their bank balances, and some will happily take payment to drop your clone into the world — who better to kill you, than someone who knows you from the inside?
